Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev called for a halt to the cuts in the defence budget, in order for the country to meet its commitment towards its allies from NATO.

Plevneliev announced that the defence budget was not to undergo any further cuts, but would rather remain at past year's levels to gradualy increase in the next years.

The President and Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces said that this was necessary since the security environment has changed drastically and dramatically.

Plevneliev participated in the celebrations on the occasion of the 123rd anniversary of the Military Medical Academy (VMA), held in Sofia.

The Head of State pointed out that he insists on Bulgaria fulfilling its commitment towards the allies, which requires that none of the 28 member countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is to cut its defence budget.

Plevneliev urged for establishing confidence in Bulgarian statehood and fulfilment of the promises that the country had made.

The President said that he is to hold a meeting with Prime Minister Boyko Borisov this week, at which the issue will be discussed.

Plevneliev commended the medics from VMA for their efforts on the treatment and rescue of thousands of patients.

He pointed to the medics' professionalism, which makes VMA one of the most preferred medical centres in Bulgaria, adding that the confidence of the numerous patients is the highest appraisal and attestation for the quality of their work.
