The extension of the red line of the Sofia metro reaching the airport is expected to be completed by the beginning of April next year, the Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova told journalists after an inspection of the construction.
The other extension of the same line – to the Business Park – would be completed by the end of April.
According to Fandakova, the construction of the third metro line in Sofia to start fairly soon and the extension of the blue line to the Hladilnika district to be completed by 2016.
Bulgaria's Kristalina Georgieva, the European Commission Vice President for Budget and Human Resources, who was also present at the inspection noted that the Sofia metro extensions were a fine example of the good use of EU funds for improving the lives of people and making them more comfortable.
“This is the goal of the EC – to let not a single Euro from the EU budget to go to waste and to use the financing efficiently and with clear results,” Georgieva said, quoted by the EC press office in Sofia.
The extension of the metro line to the Sofia Airport is funded by the EU Operational Programme for Transport and Transport Infrastructure.
Earlier this month it transpired that Bulgaria is getting another EUR 400 M for the Sofia metro lines for the 2014-2020 programming period.
