The Central Narcotics Bureau busted a drug ring in Lebanon that had employed a Bulgarian chemist to produce Captagon pills for export to a country in the Gulf, Lebanese police said on Tuesday.
A statement of the Internal Security Forces (ISF) said that the Central Narcotics Bureau had been notified that a Bulgarian chemist specialising in manufacturing Captagon pills and freebase cocaine had entered Lebanon.
According to the ISF, the arrested Bulgarian, identified as 47-year old B. Karbozov, is one of the most dangerous manufacturers in the world.
Karbozov had come to Lebanon on the request of Palestinian national M. Khalaf and Syrian citizen S. al-Qanas, who had asked him to produce the pills intended for export to the Gulf.
Following two months of investigations and surveillance, the Central Narcotics Bureau, in coordination with the Saudi security forces, arrested the three men on Sunday in separate operations in Beirut, south Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley.
The Central Narcotics Bureau has also identified the other members of the international ring and preparations are underway for their arrest with the cooperation of the competent Saudi authorities.
Captagon is a type of amphetamine that causes euphoria and suppresses pain and is reportedly widely used by Syrian rebels.
