Bulgaria: Construction Permit, Environmental Impact Assessment of Belene NPP Expire Photo by BGNES

The deadline of the permit for the construction and the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the Belene nuclear power plant have expired, according to reports of Bulgaria’s Regional Development Ministry.

The permit expires in five years after the date of issue if the site has not been completed.

If Bulgarian authorities decide to relaunch the project, these documents will have to be issued anew, according to reports of Trud daily.

The Belene NPP project was terminated by the government of center-right party GERB, after the referendum of January 2013, initiated by the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), failed to summon the necessary number of voters.

The government decided to launch a project for the expansion of the existing Kozloduy nuclear power plant instead.

If the Belene NPP project is registered again, it cannot take advantage of a simplified procedure for the issuance of a new permit and an EIA.

The permit for the construction of the Belene NPP was issued in 2008 by then-Regional Development Minister Asen Gagauzov.

The Belene NPP project is worth around BGN 1.5 B, including the site and the permits, but without the construction costs.
