The deputy Mayor of the southern Bulgarian municipality of Saedinenie, Georgi Trendafilov, was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of embezzlement.
Trendafilov was arrested in an operation of the Economic Police Chief Directorate of the Interior Ministry and the Plovdiv District Prosecutor’s Office.
The 39-year-old man was charged with embezzling BGN 15 000 from the municipal budget, according to a Friday media statement of the Plovdiv District Prosecutor’s Office, as cited by Sega daily.
The sum had been earmarked for celebrations for the day of the town of Saedinenie in 2013 and in 2014.
He will remain in custody for 72 hours under an ordinance of the prosecutor.
Trendafilov faces a penalty of up to 8 years of imprisonment and potential confiscation of part of his property and he may be banned from holding public office.
The investigation into the case continues.
