The National Assembly has approved four of the five requests to lift the immunity of lawmakers submitted earlier this week.

Chief Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov demanded on Monday that former Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov, ultra-nationalist Ataka party's leader Volen Siderov and three other MPs be stripped of their immunity from prosecution.

He also sent a letter to the European Parliament to ask it to revoke the immunity of MEP and former socialist leader Sergey Stanishev.

Bulgaria's National Assembly has only allowed Volen Siderov two weeks to renounce his immunity on his own.

The other four lawmakers already handed a written statement to Parliament to insist the step should taken.

All MPs have pending trials on different charges against them, but the cases were halted after they acquired immunity as lawmakers in October.
