A special police operation seized 112 kg of heroin, worth BGN 14 M, near the border with Turkey, said Bulgaria's Interior Ministry.

According to the report, on November 10 border police patrolling the area of the Shtit village near Svilengrad, noticed four large bags hidden in the thick shrubbery.

The officers found in the bags 119 packages, wrapped in brown tape. The narcotics test showed the substance inside them was heroin.

According to the initial report, the drugs were coming from Turkey and were destined for Western Europe.

On November 11, the police arrested two men – a father and a son – right next to the hidden bags, which police left as a decoy. In their home were uncovered mobile phones, sim cards, an illegal revolver and 190 hunting rifle cartridges.

Since the beginning of the year, the police apprehended a total of 1 tonne of heroin, half a tonne of synthetic drugs, more than 50 tonnes of marijuana and more than 100 kg of cocaine, said Interior Ministry Chief Secretary Svetlozal Lazarov.
