Bulgaria is only a transit country for combatants of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist organisation the European counter-terrorism coordinator Gilles de Kerchoves and Europol head Rob Wainwright said in European Parliament.

According to a press release of Bulgaria's MEP Emil Radev (GERB/EPP), the statement came in response to an official query of Radev at the meeting of the EP Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs committee.

De Kerchoves told the committee that Bulgaria is only a transit state of IS combatants to Syria, via Turkey, while Wainwright noted that there is no information on Bulgarian citizens fighting for the IS.

Last week Bulgaria's interim Defence Minister Velizar Shalamnov told the media there was information that Bulgarian citizens have joined the ranks of the terrorist organisation. He refused to divulge any details, but called for a meeting of Bulgaria's government security council to discuss the matter.
