Bulgaria: London Heathrow Cancels 10% of Flights over Hurricane Gonzalo A handout picture taken 16 October 2014 from the International Space Station by European Space Agency astronaut Alexander Gerst shows Hurricane Gonzalo.

London Heathrow airport has cut about 10% of incoming and outgoing flights with the 20 biggest carriers on Tuesday as the tail-end of hurricane Conzalo slammed into Britain.

Heathrow said the cancellations were precautionary and were prompted by the need to increase spacing between aircraft landing and taking off as winds of up to 112 km/h were expected to sweep the runways.

British Airways has made the majority of weather-related cancellations - all of them domestic and European flights. The worst-affected destinations, with more than one cancellation, are Barcelona, Belfast, Edinburgh, Geneva, Madrid, Manchester and Newcastle.

Gonzalo, which hit the island of Bermuda last week, is moving swiftly eastwards. It crossed the Northern Atlantic and arrived to the United Kingdom Monday and Tuesday.

Moving further east, Gonzalo is expected to bring heavy rain and strong gusts in Western Europe as well as snowfall in the European mountains. Weather forecasts predict up to 45cm of snow in the Norwegian mountains and up to 15cm of snow possible from Liechtenstein and Austria, southeast through Bosnia, Serbia and Bulgaria.

Torrential rains are expected in Bulgaria on Thursday and Friday and temperatures are likely to fall below zero on Saturday night.
