PES President Backs Bulgaria's Full Schengen Membership
Nicolas Schmit, the newly-elected president of the Party of European Socialists (PES), has voiced his support for Bulgaria's full accession to the Schengen Area
Sergey Stanishev, leader of the Party of European Socialists (PES), has said he will insist that he be stripped of his immunity from prosecution on the basis of his status as an MEP as soon as possible.
Stanishev stated his opinion on Facebook in response to an earlier announcement by Chief Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov that he would demand his MEP’s immunity.
Tsatsarov said Friday that the procedure for lifting the immunity of a Member of the European Parliament was more complicated than the respective procedure for a Bulgarian Member of Parliament.
Bulgaria’s Chief Prosecutor also vowed to demand that Volen Siderov (nationalist party Ataka) and Tsvetan Tsvetanov (center-right party Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria, GERB) be stripped of their lawmakers’ immunity as soon the 43rd National Assembly started functioning.
In his Friday statement, Stanishev reminded that an investigation against him had been launched four years ago for purely political purposes.
“It is important to me to get access to justice quickly and to clear my name. I gave up my immunity in the Bulgarian Parliament and now my status of MEP will not be a formal obstruction to the pronouncement of the court,” the leader of PES stated.
He assured that he would assist institutions in every way possible so that the trial could end quickly.
Stanishev expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that EP rules of procedure envisaged no procedure allowing him to ask that his immunity from prosecution be lifted.
He vowed to fully cooperate with the Bulgarian authorities to complete the routine procedure of the EP quickly and to inform the EP President, the PES Group, and the MEPs about that in person.
