Portugal's roads are among the most deadly in Europe. With road accidents rife, traditional methods of combating the problem are clearly not working which has prompted the government to come up with a new solution, using the latest technology. It means that, at the touch of a button, police will be able to find out all they need to know about a suspect motorist. Motorists under suspicion will be asked to type a personal code number, printed on their driving license, into an electronic device. The device, linked to a central information bureau, will then display details on everything from unpaid fines to whether the driver's insurance policy is valid. Payment will then be demanded immediately.
