Voter turnout in Bulgaria’s early parliamentary elections stood at around 9% by 10 a.m. on Sunday, according to Parvan Simeonov from polling agency Gallup International.

Simeonov told the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) that voter turnout by 10 a.m. on Sunday was similar to that in the European Parliament elections held on May 25 and slightly lower than the rate registered at the previous parliamentary elections.

Simeonov said that it was too early to draw conclusions about the voter turnout.

Polls in Bulgaria opened at 6 a.m. and are to close at 7 p.m., with an option to extend voting by one hour in the case of a queue outside the respective polling station.

According to reports of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), voter turnout by 10:30 stood at 7.81%, with a total of 539 206 people having cast ballots.

The CEC Spokesperson specified that the voter turnout in the parliamentary elections in 2013 at the same time of the day had been 12.7%.

The CEC official informed that a polling station in Pernik topped the ranking by voter turnout by 10:30 am, with 11.39%, the lowest rate being registered in Plovdiv, at 4.41%.
