Daniel Mitov Ready for Foreign Minister Role Amid Geopolitical Test in Bulgaria
Daniel Mitov, Deputy Chairman of GERB, has expressed his readiness to assume the position of Acting Foreign Minister
Austrian daily newspaper Kurier has published an article devoted to the upcoming early elections in Bulgaria, arguing that former Prime Minister and GERB leader Boyko Borisov is on a winning course.
The newspaper notes that the early elections on Sunday are the second round of early elections for the country since 2013.
The Austrian daily reminds that the former socialist-led government comprising the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS), a political party representing the Turkish minority in Bulgaria, had to resign in the summer after months-long protests triggered by the controversial appointment of DPS MP Delyan Peevski as Chair of the State Agency for National Security (DANS).
The publication also mentions questionable contracts of the former government for the Bulgarian section of the South Stream gas pipeline with Russian company Stroytransgaz, which had already been placed on a U.S. sanctions list.
Kurier cites Bulgarian polling agencies as showing that the BSP is expected to score 19% of the vote, far behind its political opponent, “center-right party GERB of the former Prime Minister, sturdy ex police officer and karate master Boyko Borisov”, which is to receive 34% of the vote.
“The new old winner on Sunday should be called Borisov,” the newspaper states.
Meanwhile, German weekly Die Zeit cites predictions of AFP of a difficult phase of forming a government.
The news agency points out that the forthcoming difficult period can be inferred from the remarks of the conservative former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, whose party GERB is the clear favorite in the election race.
AFP cites Borisov as saying in a TV interview on Thursday that he will have to “find solutions” if GERB gets 110-115 MPs, or otherwise he will leave it to the other parties to form a government.
