Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev has suggested that a failure to form a Parliament and a government after the early elections on October 5 would be detrimental to the country.

Speaking Wednesday in the Danube city of Ruse, Plevneliev warned that a scenario involving new elections would have disastrous consequences for the country.

Bulgaria’s President attended the opening ceremony of a new auto part manufacturing plant of German company Witte Automotive, which was built in only a year, according to reports of the BGNES news agency.

As regards the ongoing election campaign, Plevneliev stated that it was important for politicians to undertake clearly defined and realistic commitments and to propose concrete solutions to the existing problems.

“I believe that politicians should adopt a much humbler and more loyal approach to the people, taking into account the past two years of severe political confrontation. I think that we have all grown tired of protests and we expect stability, a statesmanlike attitude, and a constructive approach to problems. It is already clear to all politicians, and it will become even clearer after October 5, that seeking to engage in political confrontation at any cost may render the country unable to exit the state of crisis for scores of years,” Plevneliev reasoned.

He denounced election promises such as the creation of 1 million jobs, taking into account that there were a total of 400 000 unemployed in Bulgaria, and a power price cut by 20%, given that the National Electric Company (NEK) would go bankrupt in the case of a 15% price decrease and cause the entire state to collapse.

Plevneliev called on political parties to refrain from burning all bridges between one another as they would have to rebuild them very quickly after the elections.

“We have no other option but a functioning parliament and government after these elections. The Bulgarian people expect accountability from the politicians,” he stated.

The Ruse-based plant will manufacture car parts for Mercedes, Ford, VW, etc. The factory has created 550 jobs, the total investment standing at over EUR 10 M.

Plevneliev informed Wednesday that over 25 000 people were involved in the automotive cluster in Bulgaria and the number was expected to double.

He pointed out that annual turnovers in Bulgarian automotive plants amounted to some BGN 1.5 B the country was becoming an important player in the industry.

Plevneliev informed that 8 out of 10 cars in the EU had components manufactured in Bulgaria.
