The swearing-in ceremony of Ashraf Ghani as Afghan President has marked the first democratic transfer of power in the country.

"I am not better than anyone from among you. If I do any good, give me your support. If I go wrong, set me right," Al Jazeera quoted Ghani as saying at the event.

The new head of state assumes office following a months-long dispute with former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah, with both disputing election results of the run-off in June.

Just a day after the ceremony, Afghanistan and the US are expected to sign an agreement for cooperation, the US Embassy in Kabul was quoted by the Asia Times as saying.

The deal would see 12 000 US soldiers retain their presence in Afghanistan even after NATO troops' final pullback by the end of this year.
