Bulgaria’s President Rosen Plevneliev has vowed to contribute to deepening EU’s relations with Colombia at a meeting with his counterpart Juan Manuel Santos at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.

Plevneliev, as cited by the President’s press office, argued that boosting relations between the EU and Latin America would facilitate the implementation of joint projects of Bulgaria and Colombia.

Over the past few years, Colombia has maintained high levels of economic growth, at 4.8% of the GDP in 2013, and has been successful in attracting foreign investments.

Juan Manuel Santos suggested that the EU could set up a special fund to finance joint projects with Latin America and the Caribbean countries.

During the meeting, the two heads of state noted that Bulgaria and Colombia had a strong reputation in the pharmaceutical industry and the production of generic medicines, adding that this made bilateral partnership in the sphere easier.

Plevneliev and Santos discussed opportunities for training Colombian students at Bulgarian universities.

Plevneliev acquainted his Colombian counterpart with Bulgaria’s traditions in training foreign students, stressing that the diplomas issued by Bulgarian universities were valid on the territory of the EU.
