Bulgaria: Plevneliev Urges Joint Action to Thwart Foreign Terrorist Fighters

International terrorism knows no borders and no country is insured against a terrorist attack, Bulgaria’s President Rosen Plevneliev has said.

„The terrorist attack at Sarafovo airport in 2102 is yet another piece of evidence about the scale of this phenomenon: recruiting foreign fighters to commit terrorist acts,” Plevneliev said at a United Nations Security Council meeting, urging joint efforts on global scale to counter the threat posed by foreign terrorist fighters.

The Security Council members late on Wednesday unanimously adopted a binding resolution to stem the flow of foreign fighters to Iraq and Syria. The resolution requires all countries to adopt laws that would make it a serious crime for their citizens to join self-declared jihadist groups such as Islamic State.

Bulgaria’s various religious communites live in peace and accord. They were firmly united in their position on persons who join terrorist organizations. A testament to this is the declaration adopted by Bulgaria’s Chief Mufti Office which has been supported by the National Council of Religious Communities,” Plevneliev said.
