British Prime Minister David Cameron has urged Parliament to endorse air strikes against positions held by Islamic State in northern Iraq after Baghdad asked London to help.

In a speech to the United Nations General Assembly in New York  late on Wednesday, Cameron said Britain was ready to play its part in opposing “an evil against which the whole world must unite”.

While Cameron declined to discuss when the operation might begin or how long it would last, he said it could take “quite a long time”.

There is speculation that Britain’s Royal Air Force could join the US and France in air strikes against IS targets in Iraq as early as this weekend.

Cameron also said Britain “must not be so frozen with fear that we don’t do anything at all”.

“Isolation and withdrawing from a problem like Isil will only make things worse,” he said.

British MPs have been recalled to Parliament on Friday to sanction strikes on IS positions in Iraq. The action is expected to pass as it has the backing of all three main parties.

Cameron, who last night held talks with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to finalise military plans, stressed that British troops wouldn’t be sent to Iraq.

Britain was quick to join US-led military action in Iraq and Afghanistan a decade ago, but a war-weary public and rejection of air strikes on Syrian government targets by British Parliament in 2013 prompted Cameron, who is up for re-election next year, to proceed cautiously this time and secure broad support from political parties before acting.

On Thursday, Cameron will discuss with his cabinet what kind of military action he envisages.
