The "Better Together" camp is leading on the "Yes Scotland" campaign, with partial results showing between 54 and 55 percent voted "No".
After all votes in 32 council areas had been counted, it was revealed the "No" side won with 2,001,926 votes over 1,617,989 for "Yes". Turnout was at 90 percent.
The historic referendum held on September 18 had offered Scotland the opportunity to end a 307-year union with England and Wales.
Different council areas delivered different results, however, with a few councils having mostly chosen the "Yes" option.
Glasgow, the largest city, displayed a dominance of the "Yes" campaign, with 53 to 47 percent.
London has pledged to boost powers of Scotland's parliament if voters reject independence.
"The people of Scotland have spoken and it is a clear result. They have kept our country of four nations together and like millions of other people I am delighted," the BBC quoted Prime Minister David Cameron as saying.
He asserted "commitments to devolution" will be honored in full.
Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond admitted defeat, but thanked all citizens for their participation.
A statement from Queen Elizabeth II is also expected later on Friday.
Final figures are expected within hours.
Last weeks saw the "No" campaign closing in on unionists and prompted many to describe the poll as "too close to call".
