Bulgaria’s caretaker Interior Minister has argued that the Ministry needs to increase its total headcount by 1700.
A draft decree demands an increase in the number of employees of the Interior Ministry by 1700 in order to guarantee an efficient execution of the institution’s core functions, i.e. the protection of public order and combating crime.
Bakalov’s report, as cited by Sega daily, underscores that the total number of employees of the Interior Ministry has been downsized seven times, dropping from a rate of 61 700 in 2010 to the current level of 49 500.
According to the document, the staff cuts were implemented against a backdrop of complications such as increased migratory pressure and natural disasters.
The report claims that the increase in the total headcount of the Interior will not affect its budget.
Bakalov is the first Interior Minister in the past four years to demand an increase in the number of employees, with Tsvetan Tsvetanov slashing around 3000 jobs at the Ministry and Tsvetlin Yovchev seeking 15% cuts in its administrative staff in order to achieve pay rises.
