Nearly 4.3 million registered voters in Scotland are to decide Thursday on whether the country should stay in the UK or become an independent nation.

Voters in the referendum are to answer "Yes" or "No" to the referendum question: "Should Scotland be an independent country?"

A total of 2608 polling stations will be open from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. local time, according to reports of the BBC News.

Polling agencies expect a very high turnout due to the record number of people registered to vote.

Results are due Friday morning local time.

Eligible voters in the referendum include British, Irish, or EU citizens resident in Scotland and at least 16 years old. An estimated one million Scots living outside Scotland cannot vote in the independence referendum.

The undecided voters, estimated at 14%, and the vote of 16-year-olds are said to be essential for the outcome of the referendum.

Although the latest polls indicate that a No vote will prevail, the gap between the yes and no camps is just two percentage points, according to The Guardian.

If the referendum approves the creation of an independent state, Scotland, which has a population of 5.3 million, will move out of the European Union and NATO.
