Bulgaria: Azerbaijan to Kick-off Earthwork on TANAP Gas Pipeline in April 2015

Earthwork for the construction of Trans-Anatolian gas pipeline (TANAP) will start on April 1 next year, the President of Azerbaijan's State Oil Company (SOCAR) Rovnag Abdullayev said on Tuesday.

The ground-breaking ceremony for the new gas pipeline designed to carry gas from Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz field via Turkish territory to Turkey’s border with Greece is expected to be held in early 2015, Abdullayev told reporters.

Shah Deniz has estimated gas reserves of some 1.2 trillion cubic metres. Partners in the TANAP project are SOCAR, Turkey’s Botas and UK’s BP.

The pipeline's initial capacity is expected to be 16 billion cubic meters (bcm) per year, of which about 6 bcm will be delivered to Turkey and the remainder to Europe. The pipeline's capacity can nearly double to 31 bcm per year by 2026.

The cost of the project is estimated at USD 10-11 B. The new pipeline is planned to be commissioned in 2018.
