A total of BGN 89 M under Operational Program "Environment" will be paid out by the end of the week and payment requests worth another BGN 50 M are being processed, according to Bulgaria's Environment Ministry.

This is the second tranche of payments to municipalities, Government and non-governmental organizations after the transfer of BGN 166 M from the state budget in August, as Bulgaria anticipates a signal from the European Commission for lifting the EU funds freeze by end-September, according to mediapool.bg.

On Wednesday, Iliyana Tsanova, caretaker Deputy Prime Minister in charge of EU Funds, and Svetlana Zhekova, caretaker Environment Minister, are to meet EU Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn to present Bulgaria's efforts for unblocking environmental funding.

The second request for payments by the Managing Authority of the Environment OP was submitted with a directorate of the Finance Ministry on August 29 and the Finance Ministry approved a sum of over BGN 89 M for payments by the Environment Ministry in a week.

The funding will be used to cover verified expenses.

The beneficiaries include 28 municipalities, including Yablanitsa, Rakovski, Kozloduy, Byala, Karlovo, Kostinbrod, Sevlievo, Aksakovo, Tryavna, Tervel, Panagyurishte, Veliki Preslav, Stara Zagora, Krichim, Lovech, Momchilgrad, Peshtera, Hisarya, Byala Slatina, Kardzhali, Montana, Burgas, Svilengrad, Kubrat, Yambol, Knezha, Veliko Tarnovo and Chuprene, as well as natural parks Strandzha, Vrachanski Balkan and Vitosha, and national parks Rila and Central Balkan, the Regional Development Ministry, regional units of the Environment Ministry in Smolyan, Haskovo and Vratsa, and three NGOs – WWF, Biodiversity, BD Varna
