The Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) presented Monday its 16th ranking of the top 100 companies in 2013.

The BCCI studied the results of 6230 companies which generated 82.05% of the GDP in 2013, compared to 76% of the GDP in 2012. The companies were ranked in order in 5 categories.

"Against the backdrop of political instability and sharp disagreement on the political scene, the companies in the top 100 ranking registered 207% growth in sales revenues in 2013 as compared to 2012," the BCCI informed.

In the category of return on capital, 39% of the companies were in the sphere of services and transport, the majority of them specialized in engineering activities, consultancy services, and freight forwarding. Companies in the textile industry and food production had the lowest number of representatives in the category, with BCCI attributing the trend to the substantial administrative interference in the sectors on an EU-scale.

As regards reduction of liabilities, the top 100 companies managed to cut their debt by an average 56% from 2012 and at the same time their revenues increased and they registered profits. The largest number of companies in this category was that of food production companies.

As regards changes in financial results, it was mainly industrial plants which managed to do away with losses in 2012 and achieve profits in 2013.

The majority of companies in the 2013 edition of the BCCI Top 100 ranking were in the spheres of commerce (38%) and industry (19%).

Producers of machines and equipment were the two biggest groups in the sphere of industry for a second year in a row. The BCCI explained the good results of the sector with its orientation towards external markets.

Construction had an 11% share in the Top 100 ranking of the BCCI, owing its representation to a major extent to public procurement.

The BCCI underscored that the state had to take care to prevent delays in payments to construction companies because it could create serious obstacles to the sector.

The tourism sector had a 2% share in the Top 100 ranking, with the BCCI insisting that it indicated the need for boosting promotion.

29% of the companies included in the ranking were Sofia-based (including Sofia district), followed by Varna, Plovdiv, Burgas, and Stara Zagora.

77% of all companies were mirco-companies, 16% were small companies, 4% were medium-sized companies, and the remaining 3% were big companies.

The BCCI suggested that the ranking had managed to underscore the success of small and medium-sized companies.
