Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has signed a bill allowing the concession of underground gas depots to EU and US companies especially created for that purpose.

Under the new legislation Ukraine's gas transmission grid will remain state-owned, but companies will be able t have shares and to manage its depots and pipe system.

Two companies servicing depots and the gas transportation system are envisaged to be set up by the government and Western partners, the Russian-language website pronedra.ru says.

Ukrainian Parliament adopted the bill on August 14 this year, with officials earlier having pointed the move as a solution to the "super-critical" situation on the country's energy market.
