Tsvetan Vasilev, Coprorate Commercial Bank's majority shareholder, is willing to return to Bulgaria despite perceiving a threat to his life, his lawyer says.
Konstantin Simeonov, who is to defend Vasilev starting Monday, told private national channel TV7 the banker is currently residing in Serbia's capital Belgrade.
"At the [Bulgarian] Prosecutor's Office they know very well here he is. Vasilev is not hiding, but working, including on the rescue of Corporate Commercial Bank [also Corpbank or KTB]," Simeonov explained.
Simeonov reiterated Vasilev's earlier announcement he was to unveil a plan to help KTB that would be submitted to the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB).
In his words, the plan will be difficult to implement if Vasilev is abroad and also if he returns to Bulgaria but is immediately detained.
The banker would like to return in Bulgaria, even though he still believes his life is in danger with the conflict with Delyan Peevski in sight, Simeonov added.
He stressed a comeback still carried "a risk" for Vasilev, but he was ready "to take it in order to help to rescue the bank."
Simeonov announced he had moved to appeal the detention measure so that Vasilev could return and work toward that goal without interfering the ongoing probe and the evidence collection.
KTB has been under BNB conservatorship since June 20, after a bank run prompted the bank to request the step.
