One woman drowned and a young woman is missing after the torrential rains on the southern parts of Bulgaria's sea coast, said Burgas Mayor Dimitar Nikolov.

He told the bTV national channel that the woman drowned in her car on the road between Burgas and the town of Sozopol. The missing young woman, aged 21, is looked for with a helicopter.

Nikolov said it's been raining for almost 12 hours and the amount of rain exceeds 200 litres per square metre.

The coast town of Primorsko has declared a state of emergency. Town Mayor Dimitar Germanov told bTV that the floods tore down bridges and flooded homes in the village of Novo Panicharevo.

Nova TV national channel reports that the river of Ropotamo has overflown and closed the road between Sozopol and Sinemorets.

According to Nova TV the village of Biser, which was flooded two years ago and eight people drowned, has been evacuated last night, as the water in Biserska river reached alarming levels.
