Bulgaria's Customs Agency faces a shortfall of BGN 617 M by end-August 2014, according to Customs Agency head Vanyo Tanov.

In a Thursday interview for bTV, Tanov made clear that the deficit had been formed due to the weak excise duty receipts and VAT receipts.

He insisted that the VAT receipts target was very unrealistic.

"I cannot say that my predecessor Pavel Tonev is the sole person to blame as his actions or inactions were obviously driven by the orders of other people," Tanov stated, as cited by the BGNES news agency.

He went on to say that the situation with excise duty receipts had returned to the 90s, adding that there was a 30% difference between the amount of fuel released from tax warehouses and the amount of fuel sold by filling stations, adding that the discrepancy was worth over BGN 300 M, against a backdrop of excise duty receipts of BGN 1.5 B.

Tanov vowed to do everything possible to boost excise duty revenues.

He also drew attention to a series of shady appointments at the Customs Agency, stressing that officials were no longer hired on the basis of competitions but through various schemes allowing the circumvention of statutory requirements.
