Bulgaria will use all means possible to fight against articles 17 and 18 of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, according to Asen Kyuchukov, Deputy Chair of the National Association of Tobacco Growers.

The 3rd International Forum of Oriental Tobacco Producers takes place Thursday in Plovdiv.

Articles 17 and 18 of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control envisage restrictions on Burley and Oriental tobacco.

Kyuchukov, as cited by the BGNES news agency, made clear that a total of 36 000 legal persons in Bulgaria were involved in the production of these types of tobacco, meaning that the jobs of 200 000 people were at stake.

He informed that trilateral meetings were to be held on the topic between Bulgaria's National Association of Tobacco Growers, the Agriculture Ministry and the Health Ministry.

Kyuchukov also said that a meeting on the topic was to be held in Moscow on October 16.

He also announced that Bulgarian delegates intended to bring up the issue of equalizing subsidies at a congress of UNITAB, the European association of tobacco growers, on October 26, despite the existence of plans to abolish subsidies altogether.
