Bulgaria will seek assistance from the European Commission for direct damages worth BGN 5-10M caused by the Russian food embargo.

Bulgaria's caretaker Agriculture Minister Vasil Grudev noted that the damage estimate had been calculated on the basis of contracts for certain types of products which would not be fulfilled.

Grudev, as cited by the BGNES news agency, commented on the upcoming sitting of the EU Agriculture Council on September 5, stressing that it would include the topic of compensations for agricultural producers affected by Russia's ban on EU food imports.

He explained that he intended to demand assistance in cases when a dramatic price decrease could be attributed to the Russian embargo, adding that farmers had to be compensated for the price gap.

Grudev also drew attention to indirect damages which could be experienced by Bulgarian producers of fruit and vegetables, as there was a risk of unsold goods from all over the EU flooding the domestic market.

Bulgaria's caretaker Agriculture Minister informed that he had been given a preliminary go-ahead for the preparation of compensation schemes for agricultural producers in several cases.

Grudev made clear that one of the cases would involve compensations for Bulgarian farmers for the loss of production which was due to low purchasing prices, adding that an ordinance would be published in the State Gazette on Tuesday.
