Ukrainian President Kuchma Sacked Government

Embattled Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma has sacked his government, and nominated a regional governor to head a new cabinet. No reason was given for his decree replacing Anatoly Kinakh with Viktor Yanukovich, who is thought to be a strong ally of the president. President Kuchma has been accused by the US of approving the sale of an advanced radar system to Iraq, and the Ukrainian opposition has called for his resignation. Mr Yanukovich, a governor from the eastern Donetsk region, has been regarded as a potential successor to Mr Kuchma, correspondents say.
