The 131km fence which Bulgaria plans to build at the Turkish border may lead to an infringement procedure against the country, according to Michail Ekimdzhiev.

In a Wednesday interview for the Bulgarian National Radio, human rights lawyer Ekimdzhiev said that the statement of caretaker Prime Minister Georgi Bliznashki was inappropriate for any European politician.

Ekimdzhiev insisted that it was disgraceful on the part of Blizhanski, a Professor in Constitutional Law, to make such a proposal, adding that the step deprived him of the moral right to teach students at the university.

"By going for the approach of stopping immigrants instead of designing an efficient mechanism to sift out the real immigrants and by building walls Bulgaria is violating a number of UN conventions and an EU Directive. The next logical step would be to make the fence electric," he noted, as cited by Sega daily.

Ekimdzhiev argued that Bulgaria could face an infringement procedure over the measure, cautioning that it could prove quite costly for the state.

The plans to build a 131km wall on the Turkish border in a bid to "curb the refugee influx, the entry of terrorists and the spread of epidemics" were announced after a Tuesday sitting of the caretaker government.

Bulgaria has already built a 30km wire fence at a pressure point of the Turkish border.
