Shadi Martini, a Syrian who came to Bulgaria a year after the start of the civil war in his country, is among the volunteers helping the residents of flood stricken Mizia.

Martini, who used to be a hospital manager in Syria, now is helping the refugees in Bulgaria, but came to the town of Mizia to help its people, reports the bTV national channel.

“Here is much similar to Syria,” he tells bTV. “It's only that here it was the water that destroyed people's homes and in Syria it's the war. But the problems are similar – people have no homes, no food and the stores are empty. This is why I came to help. I like helping people and think that we should help each other, no matter of race and religion.”

In Mizia Martini helps with the distribution of aid for the local residents, but says he wants to go back to Syria when the war is over and help the people there.

Meanwhile, News.bg reports, that the town needs bottled water, more volunteers and help in transporting the waterlogged furniture.
