Employees of Bulgaria's State Agency for National Security (DANS) have busted an infant trafficking ring, the press office of the Agency announced.

The operation was held on July 30 on the territory of Sofia, and in other cities in Bulgaria.

The traffickers looked for socially disadvantaged pregnant women and convinced them to sell their babies. The "clients" were mainly childless Bulgarian and foreign couples who wanted to avoid the complicated adoption procedures.

Future mothers were accommodated in a house in Sofia, functioning as a private kindergarten, where they were placed under the supervision of the criminal group until they gave birth. Then, the newborns were sold with the help of a lawyer who facilitated the adoption process.

The majority of mothers were Bulgarian. The materials were reported to the Special Prosecution Office. Pre-trial proceedings have been launched and the investigation continues.
