Average Monthly Wages in Bulgaria Increase by 2.6% in Q2 2014

By end-June the number of employees under labor contract in Bulgaria has increased by 84.2 thousand or 3.8% as compared to the end of March 2014 and reached 2.30 million.

According to the preliminary data of the National Statistical Institute, the highest increase was observed in seasonal economic activities such as the accommodation and food service activities-56.5%, arts, entertainment and recreation-19.3% and agriculture, forestry and fishing-7.4%. The highest decrease of employees was recorded in the education sector by 2.4%.

In the structure of employees by economic activities the biggest relative share of employees was in the manufacturing-21.4% and wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles-16.9%.

At the end of June 2014 as compared to June 2013 the number of employees under labor contract has declined by 5.2 thousand or 0.2%. The highest decrease in absolute figures was observed in the administrative and support service activities - 15.1 thousand and in construction - 3.5thousand.

In percentages the highest decrease was in the administrative and support service activities-11.2% and in the water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities-by 5.3%.

The average monthly wages and salaries of the employees under labor contract in April was BGN 834, in May- BGN 816 and in June 2014-BGN 802.

In the second quarter of 2014 in comparison with the first quarter of 2014, the average monthly wages have increased by 2.6% reaching BGN 817. The highest increase in wages and salaries was reported in the financial and insurance activities-9.4%, in education-7.0% and in construction-5.1%.

Compared to the second quarter of 2013 the average monthly wages and salaries in the second quarter of 2014 have risen by 2.3%. The highest growth rates were recorded in economic activities such as mining and quarrying-8.8%, administrative and support service activities-6.9% and human health and social work activities-5.4%.

In comparison with a year earlier the average monthly wages and salaries in the public sector have increased by 7.4%, while in the private sector-by 0.6%.
