Only 10% of Bulgarians support stricter EU sanctions against Russia, shows a survey of the Open Society Institute Sofia.
Another 40% are of the opinion that Bulgaria should not participate in sanctions against any country in general, Russia included.
At the same time, two thirds of Bulgarians describe the situation in the country as “unbearable”, shows the survey.
The majority of those 1167 people, who were surveyed between June 6 and July 6 2014, think that in the last year things took a turn for the worse.
The number of optimists for the economic development of Bulgaria is at its lowest for the past six years and is comparable to the pessimism in 2008.
At the same time, 47% of those polled said they were willing to temporarily give up some of their civil rights and liberties in order for law and order and economic stability to be restored. Thirty-five percent said they were against.
More than half of the participants in the public opinion and social perceptions poll said that healthcare sector was the sphere that needs reforms the most and think that the already former Oresharski government completely failed in its reform programme.
At the same time 62% said they approve Bulgaria's EU membership and roughly the same percentage say they would support the country's accession, it if was happening now. Sixty-six percent said they would not support a political party who wants that Bulgaria leaves the EU.
The largest benefit of Bulgaria's EU membership, according to 30% of the respondents were the bigger employment opportunities, followed by more travel opportunities – 16% and access to EU funds – 11%.
Around 40% of Bulgarians have more trust in European institutions, than in the Bulgarian.
Fifty-seven percent of the Bulgarians are in favour of the country's joining the Schengen area, while 12% are against.
At the same time, however, the respondents are generally skeptical towards the introduction of the Euro – two thirds said they are against the country's joining the Eurozone.
On the matter of the South Stream pipeline project, opinions for and against are roughly evenly split, while 41% of those surveyed don't have an opinion. Twenty-eight percent said that is should be built, but only with the European Commission approval, while 22% say it should be built even if it was against.
