The bad weather and flooding is expected to cause a decline in honey production, according to Valentin Atanasov from the National Association "Bulgarian Beekeepers' Union."
Atanasov, as cited by the Bulgarian National Radio, made clear that honey output in 2013 had amounted to over 14 000 tonnes and some 60-70% of it had been exported, mainly to Germany, Greece and Poland.
He informed that the production of rapeseed honey had decreased by 50-60%, while the production of acacia honey had collapsed altogether and the production of linden honey had been scant.
Atanasov suggested that beekeepers would strive to compensate for the losses through herbs and sunflower.
Bulgaria's Black Sea city of Varna is to host an edition of the Honey Festival on August 13-22 with the participation of 14 honey producers from different parts of the country.
