Hebron Attack Leaves 12 Israelis Dead

The Israeli army is planning its retaliation for a gun attack by Palestinian militants which left at least 12 Israelis dead and 15 wounded in the West Bank town of Hebron. Militants armed with guns and grenades fired on a group of Jewish settlers who were walking along a main road near the Tomb of the Patriarchs, a site revered by both Jews and Muslims. The Israeli army described the attack as a carefully planned double ambush, with gunmen attacking first the settlers and then troops who tried to come to their rescue. Hours after the attack, Israeli helicopter gunships fired missiles into Gaza City, destroying a metal workshop. There are reports that two men - one of them a Palestinian policeman - were wounded by shrapnel. Talks with the Palestinians were ruled out following the Hebron killings.
