Boyan Petrov has become the first Bulgarian national to conquer the world’s second highest peak, K2, Dnevnik daily has reported.
According to information posted on the specialized website climbingguidebg.com and quoted by Dnevnik, Petrov climbed K2 on Thursday, on the 60th anniversary of K2’s first ascent and shortly before his Polish teammate Janusz Golab.
Almost immediately reaching the summit Petrov started descending, skipping the C4 camp, where Polish climbers Pawel Michalski and Artur Malek awaited the return from the peak of their compatriots Golab and Marcin Kaczkan.
Boyan Petrov, 41, a zoologist at the Natural History Museum in Sofia, scaled K2 together with the climbers from the Polish Winter Himalaism Expedition, under the leadership of Kaczkan. Until the current climbing season K2 has been conquered by some 300 climbers.
K2 lies in Pakistan, near the northern border with China. It is 8,611 meters high, second only to Mount Everest.
