Bulgarian Medical Association (BMA) head Tsvetan Raychinov has urged politicians to avoid infighting, as their actions are affecting the healthcare system.

In an interview with Novinite's Bulgarian-language website, he commented on the decision of opposition GERB to withdraw its support from the overhaul of the National Health Insurance Fund (NZOK)'s financing for 2014.

Raychinov added that if Tuesday's approval of a budget update is reversed, hospital expenditures and funds allocated to home remedies, especially for patients suffering from oncological diseases, will soon run out.

He argued the planned BGN 225 M worth update would help fill the vast part of a BGN 328 M gap in NZOK's funding, but hospitals will be severely impacted if they are left short of that money as they will not be able to meet daily needs.

GERB is now violating its previous agreement with the BMA to fully stand behind the budget overhaul, Raychinov declared.

In his view, there is no institution that medical and patient's unions could turn to if they wish that the deadlock be resolved.

However, BMA's Chairman added the organization stands ready to explore all options during the last remaining days of Bulgaria's 42nd Parliament.
