Bulgaria: GERB to Win Most Votes in Next Election – IMP Poll

Bulgaria’s opposition center-right GERB party would have won 27.2% of the vote if parliamentary elections were held last Friday.

The figure is well ahead of the results for the ruling Socialists, who would have gathered 13.5% of the ballots cast.

The results of a survey conducted by Sofia-based think-tank Institute of Modern Politics (IMP) from July 20 to July 25 are broadly in line with the findings of a similar poll conducted by Exacta Research between July 10 and July 15, which gave GERB 26% of the vote versus 15% for the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP).

IMP said that the liberal Movement for Rights and Freedoms, DPS, the junior partner of the Socialists in the outgoing government coalition, would have come third with 7.3% of the vote. The poll by Exacta Research gave DPS 7% of the vote.

Bulgaria without Censorship, a party headed by MEP and former journalist Nikolay Barekov, would have won 6% of the vote, the IMP’s survey showed. This compared with 5% support for Barekov’s party in Exacta Research’s poll.

The Reformist Bloc, a center-right alliance, would have gathered 4.5% of the vote, if elections were held last Friday, IMP said. The level of support is close to the figure of 6% reported by Exacta Research.

According to the IMP’s survey, nationalists from Ataka party who had secured majority for the BSP-DPS coalition cabinet in the current Parliament, would not make it to the next chamber. They would have won just 2.4 percent of the vote if elections were held last Friday, below the entry threshold of 4%.

Forty-four percent of those polled by IMP said they would prefer to have a one-party government after the next parliamentary elections, while 12 percent would like to see a broad coalition between GERB and BSP. Only 4% said they would like to see a coalition government comprising GERB and DPS.
