"The DPS said to everyone that to be in power is not an end in itself, it's not a cliche," Lyutvi Mestan, leader of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, said.
In fact, he argued, the party acted in the name of "ideals".
Mestan made his comments on July 24, just before Plamen Oresharski's cabinet was swept through Bulgaria's Parliament.
He was referring to a press conference back in June which triggered a rift within the ruling coalition. The leader then personally stated the cabinet could not have a full term.
Though Mestan vigorously insisted that event had not caused the resignation, from today's viewpoint it undoubtedly changed socialist BSP's behavior, after it had claimed for months it was not an option to step down.
Neither should willingness to dismiss "overeating with power" as an end in itself be overestimated. Throughout the years DPS has proved to be the only party capable of maintaining a solid electoral base.
It is also the single one with a relatively stable share of votes which has only displayed a trend to go up in recent elections.
All that considered, the DPS is the only party which has nothing to lose after the resignation.
