Bulgaria: Bad Weather, Ukraine Crisis, 'Black PR' Ruin Tourist Season in BG Photo: BGNES

The Bulgarian seaside resorts are one quarter empty, even though it's the peak of season, reports the local Standart daily.

According to hotel owners at the Black Sea coast the season was unusually weak and they are forced to offer discount prices in an effort to attract tourists.

They expect that August, which is usually the busiest month, will be even worse.

The main reasons for the slow season are the bad weather, the crisis in Ukraine and the claims that the seawater was contaminated with hepatitis, E-coli and other bacteria, which, according to the hoteliers, was “black PR”.

The north coast town of Balchik, which usually attracts Romanian tourists, for example, is about 60-70% full, while at the same time last year 85% of the beds were occupied, according to Desislava Kiryakova, a hotel owner.

The resorts south of Burgas are also unusually empty for this time of year. Last week's local floods and overflowing rivers dumped large amounts of silt and mud into the sea and the tourists don't want to go into the water.

At this time last years the southern resort towns were “full to the brim” and it was virtually impossible to find a free room.
