Bulgaria: Greece To Spend EUR 1B on Army Modernization File photo.

Greek Defense Ministry is planning a large-scale modernization of the army which will cost a minimum of EUR 1B.

Currently, the modernization program is up for consideration in the parliamentary defense committee. If approved, the plan will be launched by the end of July, according to local media, cited by Bulgarian private TV station BTV.

A total of 36 M270 Multiple Launch Rocket Systems will be modernized. Another part of the funds will go for the transportation of American Oshkosh HEMTT (Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck) from the US to Greece.

Some EUR 150M will be allocated for the purchase of 30,000 120 mm caliber shells for main battle tanks Leopard 2. Another EUR 400M is provisioned for the modernization of the 4 frigates under the project MEKO 200HN, as the parts will be produced by local companies.

A total of EUR 350M will be spent on modernization and equipping of the 4 coastal patrol aircraft P-3B Orion. Furthermore, 11 multipurpose helicopter S-70B Seahawk and 9 Elli-class frigates will be renovated, BTV informs.
