Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev has called on Parliament, which is to dissolve August 6, to initiate an urgent revision of the budget for 2014.

Plevneliev believes a new version should be adopted in which boosted expenditures in healthcare and other sectors are a top priority, amid calls by experts and doctors that the money of the National Health Insurance Fund (NZOK) will run out in September.

"As a head of state bearing responsibility for the caretaker government, I would like to point out the urgency... of the General Assembly [Parliament];s efforts to revise the budget. Failure to carry it out is serious, and the functioning of an interim cabinet should not be blocked for unwilling to tell the truth about numbers in the country, about the budget and its implementation," the Bulgarian National Radio quoted Plevneliev as saying.

Bulgaria's head of state is due to announce the names in the forthcoming caretaker cabinet in August.

The interim government, which is due to take over from the socialist-liberal cabinet currently in office, will not have any budgetary competences during its two-month-long term.

Calls to update expenditures come after Finance Minister Petar Chobanov stressed such measure is not in sight, as public debt is not expected to reach current 2014 estimates putting it at BGN 3 B (EUR 1.5 B).

Plevneliev also advised politicians to unite ahead o Tuesday's political consultations, at which the future of the current parliament, boycotted by two of its four parties, is set to top the agenda.

Last week conservative opposition GERB and far-right Ataka, which had previously cast its support behind the government, announced they deemed Parliament illegitimate.

They believe it has embarked on taking important legislative decisions despite multi-party agreements that it would not do so.

Bulgaria is poised for early elections on October 5, after political consultations prompted the President to pick the date in autumn as the most favourable option.

The country plunged into a political crisis in June, with co-ruling Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) withdrawing its support from the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP)-led coalition and declaring it could not have its full term in office.
