More than 200 000 Bulgarians work in Greece, Plamen Dimitrov, leader of a leading trade union organization, announced.

He added many of them are facing a number of issues in the neighboring country.

"A first problem [of workers] are sinking wages. This is the most usual complaint coming not only from Bulgarians but also from Greeks," Dimitrov, who heads the Confederation of Independent Trade Union in Bulgaria (KNSB), said at a press conference in Thessaloniki, Greece's second-largest city.

"The second one is the extension of working time, hiring one part-time to [assign them] more work. This is something we also have in Bulgaria," Dimitrov was quoted by Focus News Agency as saying.

The KNSB Chair added irregular salaries, lack of social insurance, lack of a proper contract or of days off work were also common problems among Bulgarians in the Southeast European country.

Discrimination by employers and severe working conditions are also an issue as a vast part of the Bulgarian workers are occupying positions with meager payment.

About 40 000 thousand Bulgarians work in Northern Greece, with nearly a third of those based in Thessaloniki.

Two-thirds of Bulgarian citizens in the country are women, with 75% of them having only secondary education.
