Bulgaria’s Parliament voted in favor of terminating Socialist leader Sergey Stanishev’s MP term, which would allow him to enter the European Parliament.

After 2 previous attempts which failed due to lack of quorum, Friday’s session convened with the necessary amount of deputies present. Without debates, they proceeded straight to the vote. A majority 171 MPs voted in favor of releasing Stanishev, 3 voted against, and 5 abstained.

Stanishev, who is also a leader of the Party of European Socialists (PES), will serve as a Bulgarian representative to the European Parliament starting July 1. Despite calls for his resignation as leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) following the disappointing results in May’s elections, Stanishev has clearly stated he will not give up his post.

Later on Friday, leaders of Bulgaria’s parliamentary parties will meet to discuss the political situation in the country and possibly agree on a date for early elections. After the last round of consultations, President Rosen Plevneliev revealed that they would take place between September 28 and October 12.

John, the current government is in power under the laws of Bulgaria, they are good political operators.

Sergey Stanishev has an unblemished career and I think he can best help Bulgaria be being active in Europe and right now I think because he was born in the Ukraine can be played to our advantage.

No cell in Belene for me, our government got power under the laws of Bulgaria and should stay in power.

Fuck early elections, most people dont vote anyway so there is no point in wasting the time and the money.

Stanishev is a disgrace for any country, and no spindoctor can change that.
And if you believe that the current government came into power legally, then please book a singel room in Belene.
Stanishev and his cronies represent everything that's wrong with Bulgaria. The lust for "power" makes them blind for the needs of the common people. Also it let them choose partners with horrific backgrounds.
Just out of curiosity, can you name a politician in Bulgaria with a "clean" record?

Seedy, Sergey was born in the Ukraine and it would suit the EU to have someone who was born in the Ukraine have a senior position in the EU right now.

And it will be great for Bulgaria.

Yeah right! Ser-gay's "skills" will bring huge prestige to us all - Europe will be impressed by a lying little weasel with sticky fingers and no morals.......just the thing to reinforce the negative stereotypes so prevalent already!

John, you make interesting points.

GERB fucked Bulgaria with their right wing economic austerity agenda which held back economic growth.

Last May Bulgaria voted in such a way that only a power sharing government could be created.

GERB as the largest party were offered to form a Government but failed. The Socialists and the Turks then formed a government and when the President vetoed their budget Ataka proped up the government.

So good political operating by the Socialists, Turks and Nationalists.

Sergey needs to take his skills in getting different groups to work together to Europe.

Yeah, Europe needs more lying leaders!
BSP with its glorious leader Stanishev does everything possible to ruin the chances for the next generation and f**k up Bulgaria beyond recognition. And don't get me started on the other KP wings (DCP, GERB, ATAKA, BBZ, RB) that claim to be parties.
Pray tell me, if Sergey is such an enlightened leader, why has he lost every election so far? Why are we people poorer then 5 or 10 years ago? Or are you too optimistic to see that?

Hi John, Bulgaria is no shipwreck, but it needs to be represented at the top tables in Europe and Stanishev as leader of the European Socialists can do this.

In a ship wreck who is leaving the ship last? Right the captain.
So that makes Stanishev what? Right a rat! Sorry, I want to be more precise, a lying rat!

Sergey best wishes for you in Europe.

The Party of European Socialists is one of the largest parties in the European Parliament and you as its leader brings prestige to Bulgaria.

Bravo.
