World football’s governing body FIFA has launched disciplinary proceedings against Uruguay’s Luis Suarez for allegedly biting an opponent during the 1:0 victory over Italy.

In the 79th minute of Tuesday’s World Cup group C match, Suarez charged for a ball with Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini in the penalty box. Camera replays showed the Uruguayan biting Chiellini’s shoulder – something the referee failed to spot, despite the defender’s claims and evidence of bite marks on his skin.

This is not the first occasion when Suarez gets involved in a similar scandal. Two times already, in 2010 at PSV Eindhoven, and in 2013 for Liverpool, the Uruguayan was handed extended bans after biting opponents. In 2011, the striker was banned and fined for racially abusing Patrice Evra of Manchester United.

FIFA will review video material of the incident in the Italy match and decide what measures to take. Some experts suggest Suarez could face as long as a 2-year suspension from international football. The Uruguayan FA, meanwhile has until 5 pm Brazilian time on Wednesday to submit evidence in Suarez’ defense.

Uruguay progressed into the round of 16 at the World Cup, where they will face Colombia, but a potential Suarez ban could prove costly for Oscar Tabarez’ side.
