Support for Bulgarian Govt Down 15% since European Elections
Support for Bulgaria's socialist-led government fell by 15% in the 15 days after the European Parliament elections, according to the Gallup International polling agency.
According to Gallup International data, as cited by bTV, 47% of the polled demand the resignation of the government headed by Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski, while 32% support it.
According to a survey of the Public Policy Laboratory of the New Bulgarian University, at least 5 parties would make it into the 43rd National Assembly if elections were held today and 4 million voters cast ballots.
Center-right party GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) would be backed by 22-24% of the voters, followed by the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) with 15-17%, and the liberal party Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) with 14-16%. The other parties to pass the 4% threshold to enter parliament would be the Bulgaria without Censorship party of Nikolay Barekov and the right-wing formation The Reformist Bloc.
According to local polling agencies, Bulgarians are in favor of early elections and are even willing to go to the polls as early as August.
However, the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) needs time to print the ballots, to organize and informational campaign and to recruit staff for the sectoral election commissions across the country.
According to Tsvetozar Tomov from the CEC, the organization of the early elections requires at least 2 months.
The last three Bulgarian Prime Ministers registered substantial rates of disapproval at the ends of their terms in offices, with socialist leader Sergey Stanishev registering a rate of disapproval of 74%, followed by Boyko Borisov (GERB) with 71% and Plamen Oresharski with 68%.
