The Israeli Knesset has elected former Parliament Speaker and conservative Likud lawmaker Reuven Rivlin as next President.

Rivlin will take in July the largely ceremonial office from Shimon Peres, 90, who ends his seven-year term.

He received 63 votes from Members of Knesset to become the country's tenth President, thus defeating his rival, liberal Meir Sheetrit, by ten MK votes, the Jerusalem Post reports.

The 74-year-old is known for opposing the establishment of a Palestinian state, but favours giving Palestinians Israeli citizenship.

In Tuesday's vote he also drew support from factions of the Israeli Arab minority.
